White House Plays Down al-Maliki Cancellation

Does anyone out there remember a Seinfeld episode from season four called “The Pick”? Well, now it’s shades of Seinfeld inside the Bush administration. And today’s Bush episode would have to be called “The Snub”. I can practically hear Tony Snow’s plaintiff wail:

But there was no snub!

Right. And I suppose that al-Maliki cancelled a meeting with the President of the United States of America and the King of Jordan The Snubsimply because he suddenly decided to attend a palm reading, instead? Only hours before al-Maliki abruptly cancelled the photo-op appearance with the two heads of state, a “classified” White House internal memorandum was printed by the New York Times. The memo—which was leaked by unknown sources—contained blunt language questioning al-Maliki’s fitness to successfully run a peaceful, nonsectarian Iraqi government. (In other words, it basically questioned al-Maliki’s integrity and manhood. Another example of Bush administration diplomatic savoir-faire and timing?) Now, in classic Bush administration fashion, the White House is vociferously denying any connection between the leaked memo and the cancellation of this evening’s meeting in Amman.

But there was no snub!

Go for it, administration! Maybe if you repeat it frequently enough and loudly enough, someone might actually start to believe it.
