Threat of Al-Qaeda Cyber Attack

It’s probably much ado about nothing, but here’s a quote from CNN:

A Department of Homeland Security advisory cautioning that al Qaeda may be planning cyber attacks on banking and financial institution Web sites was issued out of an abundance of caution, although there is no corroboration, a DHS spokesman told CNN Thursday.

A jihadist Web site discovered and translated by the Department of Homeland Security is apparently calling for denial-of-service attacks “against stock and banking sites during the month of December through what the Web site called the ‘infidel New Year’s.’”  According to the CNN report, “a denial-of-service attack involves repeatedly bombarding a server with so many hits that it shuts down.”

The CNN report continues:

‘There is no information to corroborate this aspirational threat,’ said DHS spokesman Russ Knocke, saying the advisory was sent out ‘as a routine matter and out of an abundance of caution.’

The unidentified Web site called for individuals with the requisite skills to carry out separate attacks against the institutions.
