The Golden State Fence Company of Southern California was fined a combined penalty of $5 million Thursday for illegal business practices—specifically the practice of knowingly hiring illegal immigrants. Two senior executives, to include the company’s founder, chairman, and president, face stiff personal fines and up to six months in jail. The maximum sentence for the infraction is five years.
According to the Associated Press, the Riverside office of Golden State employed 100 illegal workers between 1999-2005. The company earned $150 million in 2004 and employs a total of 750 workers.
The Associated Press article notes that “among Golden State Fence’s projects in recent years was construction of part of a 14-mile border fence in San Diego in the late 1990s.”
