When I was a kid, there was this guy named Archie Manning who played quarterback for the hapless New Orleans Saints.

He was a good quarterback who was never given a good team to lead. Some time ago–I don’t know when–he retired from NFL football to quietly raise a family. Along the way Archie had two sons, Peyton Manning and Eli Manning:

Well, last year young Peyton took the Indianapolis Colts to a Superbowl victory.
And this year, young Eli (the OTHER son) is taking the New York Giants to the Superbowl.
How about THOSE boys?
Good job, Archie!

If there’s anybody I’d really like to have a beer with, it’s Sandra Bullock, Brett Favre, and Peyton Manning…in that order. Little brother Eli became the New John Elway in my personal pantheon of peeve when he cried like a wedgied fourth-grader after being drafted by the Chargers. I hate people who do that! He can spare me a lifetime of hatred merely my beating those smug SOBs, the Unbeaten New England Patriots. We’ll see.
