I wonder why an apparel maker would urge its employees for vote for Barack Obama or John McCain?
Oh, wait! American Apparel Inc. is located in Los Angeles, and its workforce is heavily Mexican-American! Everyone is familiar with McCain’s inclination to provide amnesty to millions of illegals. Obama is soft on immigration, too. And unlike Hillary Clinton, Obama is inclined to provide drivers’ licenses to undocumented workers.
Now I get it! From Politico.com:
American Apparel is promoting a stylin’ Obama, and a handsome young McCain, on its homepage, and a reader sends in this email to employees from the hip, sometimes controversial retailer, whose Los Angeles workforce is heavily Mexican-American.
Here’s the letter:

And here’s a screen capture from a page on the American Apparel Web site (the tab for the page is labeled “Legalize LA”):

LA is already legal, you bastards! It’s your undocumented workforce that isn’t legal!
Anyway, here’s a pro-immigration reform ad American Apparel ran in the The New York Times on December 22, 2007:

If it’s true that the letter above was sent to American Apparel employees, I’d say the company has taken a very big step over the line of propriety.
And it’s extremely clear that their interest is in maintaining their grasp on a pool of low-paid employees, not on the welfare of the employees they exploit. What a cynical piece of offal this company appears to be!
I’ve already sent them a comment about their cynical “activism,” along with a promise that I’ll never intentionally buy anything they produce. Go here if you’d like to send them a choice comment, too.
